Scaling & Root Planing

Root scaling and planing is a crucial treatment for patients with gum disease, aimed at restoring the health of gums and teeth. This deep cleaning procedure effectively targets the harmful effects of gum disease, promoting a healthier mouth and preventing future oral health complications.

Root scaling is a specialized periodontal treatment aimed at thoroughly cleaning the gums, going beyond the typical cleaning done during a regular dental check-up. It specifically targets plaque, bacterial toxins, and tartar deposits on the teeth and root surfaces. To effectively remove this buildup, dental scalers or ultrasonic instruments are used.

For a more comprehensive cleaning, root planing may also be performed. This procedure involves cleaning below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar, while also smoothing the root surfaces. Smoothing the roots helps prevent the progression of gum disease by making it more difficult for bacteria to adhere to them. These non-surgical treatments are crucial for patients with deep periodontal pockets, as they work to eliminate harmful bacteria and promote healthier gums.

We recommend root scaling and planing as an effective treatment for managing chronic periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease. This procedure is especially beneficial for patients experiencing gum recession. During a routine dental exam, we carefully evaluate the gum line and periodontal pockets. The presence of deep pockets often indicates periodontal disease, which may require root scaling and planing.

If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to serious oral and overall health issues, including receding gums, tooth loss, bone loss, and loose teeth. Root scaling and planing help mitigate these risks by removing harmful bacteria and addressing some of the existing damage. In cases where periodontal pockets have deepened significantly, additional treatments may be necessary to fully manage the condition and prevent further deterioration.

Depending on the severity of the condition, root scaling and planing may be divided into multiple appointments. These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, with local anesthesia used to numb the treatment area as needed for the patient’s comfort. Rather than addressing the entire mouth in one visit, we may focus on specific sections during each appointment.

The process begins with root scaling, where plaque deposits are removed from the teeth and deep pockets between the gums. This is followed by root planing, which involves a deeper cleaning below the gum line to eliminate bacteria and plaque. During root planing, the roots are smoothed to remove tartar buildup and bacteria, making it more difficult for them to reattach. After the procedure, the gums and mouth are thoroughly flushed with water to remove any remaining loose debris or bacteria.
