Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease can lead to loose teeth or even missing teeth. In addition, gum disease can lead to swollen gums, bad breath and oral discomfort. Our periodontist can help you manage and overcome this condition.

Common signs of gum disease include red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums, and loose teeth. Gum disease is typically diagnosed during a dental exam through a thorough evaluation of your gums, measuring pocket depths around your teeth, and possibly taking X-rays to assess bone loss.

Treatment for gum disease depends on its severity. Early-stage gum disease, known as gingivitis, can often be treated with professional cleanings and improved oral hygiene at home. More advanced stages, like periodontitis, may require scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), antibiotic therapy, or surgical procedures to remove infected tissue and regenerate lost bone.

Gum disease can be managed and controlled, but it requires ongoing care. Early intervention can reverse gingivitis, but once it progresses to periodontitis, it becomes a chronic condition. With proper treatment and regular dental visits, you can prevent further damage and maintain healthy gums.
